Advocacy: Our Conscience--Our Power
Arts and Arts Education are our conscience and our power. The arts and arts education are not only important -- they are necessary and critical -- for the social, political, economic, cultural, intellectual, technological, and scientific developments and indeed advancements in our communities and in society at large. It is essential that we as artists and educators arm ourselves with research, information, and resources so that we may serve as advocacy leaders and nurture positive, active, and effective environments and conversations about arts, arts education, and arts advocacy. Participants will learn about and receive information regarding how to advocate as an individual and a group for the arts and arts education. Learn how to effectively put your passion and your voice to promote arts and arts education!

Exploring the Emphasis on Collaboration in the National Core Arts Standards

“Collaboration is in many ways the engine that drives our economy and our sense of shared culture” (National Core Arts Standards: Conceptual Framework). Collaboration is a valuable and necessary skill for success in life and it is a skill that can be learned!  It is not enough to merely provide opportunities to collaborate, we must intentionally teach the skills of collaboration and provide students feedback on their progress in the development of collaboration skills.  In this session participants will examine the emphasis of collaboration throughout the National Core Arts Standards and begin to explore some of the conditions that support growth in this important life and learning skill.

Make Cool Things!: Real World Projects and How to Assess Them.
During this session we will look at some alternative assessment strategies that can be incorporated into projects or classrooms that emphasize a real world approach to quality of work for the students. We will also discuss how a design thinking mindset can help students to collaborate more effectively and how to manage small group dynamics. And we will talk about how to integrate your interests and connections to provide opportunities for meaningful projects. It will be a great friendly time to communicate with our peers in Arts Education on some of the things that are working well in our classrooms.
This is a great session to come to if you are a Teacher or Administrator and you are looking for more ideas on how to get your students engaged in their courses.
