Jonathan Parker

Center for World Music
World Music in the Schools Program Director
A musician and folklorist, Jonathan Parker plays a wide variety of musical instruments, including the fiddle, tin whistle, mandolin, and the säckpipa and gaita gallega (bagpipes of Sweden and Spain). As a founding board member of the non-profit organization San Diego Folk Heritage, he promoted and managed concerts, workshops, and festivals for many years. As a musician, he has studied and performed the traditional instrumental music of Ireland, Scotland, England, Spain, and Sweden for more than four decades. During that time, he has played extensively for dancers and in many musical ensembles, including The Perfect Cure, The Boxty Band, and The Gallowglass Collective. In addition, he brings to his work experience as an actor, luthier, and graphic artist. Jonathan holds a deep belief that bringing a wide variety of music and art into our children’s lives leads them to a better understanding of how we relate to one another as people, as contributing members of our society, and as participants in the broader cultural landscape of the world around us.
